Signs your loved one may be suffering from nursing home abuse

As your elderly loved ones live out the final years of their life, they deserve dignity and care. Unfortunately, many families are ill-equipped to deal with the medical, emotional and physical needs that the aging require and turn to nursing homes.

When you put your loved ones in a nursing home, you trust that they are getting the best care possible. At the same time, there are worst-case scenarios when patients are abused at nursing homes. These are a few signs to watch for if you are concerned.

Dirty living conditions

Nursing homes have requirements to provide a clean, safe place for patients to live. Obvious signs of neglect or abuse include dirty bathroom areas, unsanitary kitchens and soiled bedding and clothing.

Anxiety and other psychological issues

If your loved one is being abused by someone at the nursing home, she may become sullen, depressed and withdrawn. She may also panic when left alone with the individual or get upset when you leave. If you notice your loved one becoming distant and closed off, you should keep an eye out for abuse or neglect.

Physical illness and injuries

As patients age, some illness can be expected, but if you feel the injuries are way too frequent, you may be dealing with nursing home abuse. Watch for signs of poor nutrition, dehydration, injuries from falls, bed sores or infections.

Personal hygiene concerns

Many patients in nursing homes are unable to handle everyday hygiene chores and rely on staff members to help them. This can include bathing, brushing teeth, combing hair, clipping nails and just getting dressed. If your loved one if being neglected or abused, she may try to do these things on her own and get injured, or else may complete ignore personal hygiene.

These issues can happen anywhere. If you are concerned about how a family member is or was treated by staff at a nursing home, speak to an experienced attorney to discuss the best ways to protect your loved one.
